Say goodbye to exam phobia!

When exams arrive, students become extremely worried and make plans about how to study, how to perform better and get good grades. Some students find exams so difficult that the phobia makes them sick as they simply find themselves unable to cope up with the exam fear.

Love your studies

Attitude matters a lot during exams. Students whose attitude towards education is negative usually obtain less or average marks while students who enjoy studying always do well. That’s why thinking about studies as dull, boring, hard, etc., will only add more difficulties in your learning process. Love your studies the way you love your toys, games, etc.

Give it the same attention and passion. Always have a positive attitude towards your goal and be responsible for whatever you undertake. Always think, “Yes, I can do it!”

Playtime

Hamdoon, a 14-year-old school-going student says, “My mother always scolds me when I play outside during my exams days. She sometimes locks me in my room so that I can study. But that never lets me study properly, which results in poor grades.”

Parents should always supervise their children’s activities but excessive restrictions during exams should be avoided as it may make children rebellious and dull. They need breaks to refresh themselves so they must have some time to play too. Sometimes due to the over expectations of parents, children fall ill before the exams or blank out on the exam day.

Don’t eliminate your relaxing activities such as playing or watching TV from your daily schedule because these activities are extremely important in revitalising you as continuous studies and not relaxation can make you exhausted.

Avoid getting stressed

Stress is very common during exams but its treatment is in your own hands. One should make a timetable before exams. This is one of the best ways to avoid last-minute preparations and getting stressed out. Cramming should always be avoided and understanding and comprehending a topic should be preferred. When you have understood the material, you have won half the battle and now you only need to memorise it. Remember there is no substitute for hard work or discipline. Both are a potent combination for success in any field.

High performing students always study on regular basis. They study at least two hours a day so that there is no tension of trying to learn a lot during the exam days.

Studying for exams

Here are some tips that will help you study in a better way for exams.
Ask a teacher’s advice on how to study for a particular course.
Take short breaks while studying. This will release your stress.
Get enough sleep and have nutritious food.
Plan your study timings.
Do exercise or at least walk or play to refresh your body.

Practise old question papers. This will give you an idea of what pattern has been followed previously by the teachers so that you can follow it to get better prepared.

Make your own questions, which you think are important for exams, and then answer them yourself.

If you can’t memorise something then be your own teacher. Study a sentence with full attention and then say it in a loud voice as if you are teaching your students.

Always say: “Nobody can do better than me.” This will boost your confidence but avoid being overconfident.

If you are studying in the evening, don’t sleep right after you complete you stop studying. First release your stress by walking or listening to music or doing anything that interests you and after that go to sleep.

On the exam day

Have a healthy breakfast but avoid oily and heavy things,
Do the final revision of the most important topics after breakfast,
Get the material organised and recheck your stationery (pen, pencil, compass box, eraser, etc) in your bag,
Make sure you drink plenty of water throughout the day to avoid getting dehydrated,
If feeling tensed, practise deep breathing,
Get engaged in positive self-talk,
Never revise at the last moment.
In the examination hall
Take the water bottle along with you to the examination hall,
Organise everything you need i.e. pen, ruler, eraser, etc.,

Be calm,

Plan out your timing during the examination,
Practise deep breathing and focus on something positive,

Do not start your paper right after getting it from the examiner. First read the instructions and then all questions very carefully. Then mark all the questions that you know and start from the one you know the best.

After the examination

Don’t get stressed after you are done with your paper — whatever is done cannot be changed,

Do not indulge in comparisons with others by asking how they answered the questions — it will only add to your worries,

Aim to improve in the next examination if something goes wrong.

You are not the only one who has to go through the worrisome phase of exams — generations have appeared in the past for examinations and generations will be appearing in the future too. The best way is to face what comes your way and go through all the difficulties with a smile on your face — you will surely come out as a winner.
